What is Direct Cremation?
June 13, 2023What is Direct Cremation?
There is a lot of confusion around the term ‘direct cremation’. A direct cremation quite simply involves the deceased being taken directly to the crematorium in a simple coffin. There are no mourners present and a service does not take place at the time of the cremation.
Who offers direct cremation?
We do! Independent research has found that many families are unaware that independent funeral directors are able to offer direct cremation. Many people believe this to be a new innovation when in fact, R. Locke & Son have offered direct cremation for many, many years because we recognise that one size does not fit all and are proud to offer a bespoke service to suit each family’s needs.
Why choose a direct cremation?
It maybe that your loved one expressed their wish for a funeral “with no fuss” or didn’t want a traditional funeral. "Direct Cremations" can be a simple, dignified and affordable choice, which provides you with the opportunity for you to organise and celebrate the life of your loved one in your own way.
Sadly, there seems to be a misunderstanding that the choice of a direct cremation is the beginning and the end of a funeral, this does not have to be the case. If you wish to have a separate ceremony, viewing, a particular choice of coffin or any other element of a traditional funeral, all you have to do is let us know. An unattended cremation is simply an option for the final part of the funeral that R. Locke & Son are pleased to offer.
Can I choose a direct cremation for my pre-paid funeral?
You may wish to make arrangements in advance for a simple, unattended direct cremation, without the ceremony or expense associated with a traditional funeral. This is becoming more popular with customers who don’t want a traditional funeral service or procession but do want to make their wishes known. It could be the perfect choice if you want to take care of things your own way on your own terms.
Things to be aware of…
There are a number of reasons for the recent increase in the visibility of the direct cremations and sadly the main driver was the restrictions imposed by CoVid-19. One of the reasons we’re perhaps more aware of direct cremations is the increase in venture capital companies investing in high profile providers. It feels as if every second TV advert is by another new startup offering no frills direct cremations.
Families don’t necessarily save money with such providers and it’s often the case that their loved one will be transported across the country to a remote crematorium. This makes it incredibly difficult to spend time with the deceased or arrange a service if you did change your mind. Many of the high-profile funeral providers limit their service to the collection of the deceased and return of ashes.
With R. Locke & Son arranging your direct cremation you can be assured that your loved one will be treated with the same care and dignity, the same options(if desired) and quality of service as you would expect with a traditional cremation service or burial.
