About

Our beginnings

We can trace the roots of our business back to 1853 so, for us, carrying on a family tradition is a way of life. R Locke & Son have been part of the community since Raymond (the ‘R’ in R. Locke & Son) was employed as an apprentice wheelwright upon leaving school, at the age of fifteen, in 1940. The wheel wrights ran in tandem with the village undertakers. Raymond completed his apprenticeship seven years later and was reported in The Sunday Mail as being the youngest wheelwright in the country. This soon led to his ownership of the business and the beginning of the family concern that forms the foundations of our present company.
